Becoming Kink/BDSM Aware: A beginners workshop for clinicians

Becoming Kink/BDSM Aware: A beginners workshop for clinicians

Modern Tribe Counseling,

3720 Chamblee-Dunwoody Rd, Suite 2D

Chamblee, GA 30341

As clinicians we get little to no training in human sexuality, let alone sexual practices and lifestyles of those who engage in kink/BDSM/Leather lifestyles. When we are not comfortable or aware of a topic it makes it a challenge for clients to feel safe and secure in sharing their experiences, desires and relationships and how they affect their journey while in session with you. This workshop is designed to provide an introduction and overview of the most common range of sexualities as they relate to kink/BDSM/Leather lifestyles in an effort to help minimize imposing their personal values related to relationship structures and sexuality within the counseling relationship (ACA Code of Ethics A.4.b). Topics will include: defining kink, BDSM and Leather; defining identities within the kink community; understanding consent as part of kink/BDSM/Leather interactions; assessing for pathology vs healthy sexual expression; avoiding kinkphobia and othering; common presenting issues; issues related to coming out/being outed.

This six hour course is approved by the LPCA for 3 Ethics hours for all disciplines licensed under the GA Composite Board and 3 Core CE for LAPC/LPC or 3 Related for all other disciplines under Rule 135, approval 8025-19M, with the following objectives: Develop a basic understanding of the kink/BDSM/Leather lifestyles and specific counseling engagement concerns of individuals may present at your practice; understand the challenges and issues clients and behavioral health professionals face in providing services to individuals who practice kink/BDSM/Leather including assessing for pathology vs health sexual expression; identify ways in which behavioral health professionals can limit their own biases and support clients who are exploring or engaging in consensual non-monogamy.

Registration begins at 8:30am, class begins at 9am and ends at 4:30pm. There will be a 60 minute lunch break. Please consider bringing your own lunch.
